Good overview of Supreme Court ethics breaches

Leonard Leo helped Trump aide financially while Supreme Court nomination was pending

Right-wing judicial activist Leonard facilitated a deal whereby Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway sold her company to Creative Response Concepts while she was involved in picking a nominee for the Supreme Court.

"It appears Leo, via one of his dark money groups, helped finance the transaction between the firm, Creative Response Concepts Inc., and Conway — worth between $1 million and $5 million, according to experts citing the timing of the transactions filed through the same attorney and bank. At the time, CRC was also bringing in millions of dollars from dark money groups to promote Leo's picks. "

State and local elections cost $16.7 billion, but dark money would make that figure higher if it could all be counted. Portland, ME, and Oakland, CA passed public financing ballot measures, and Arizona passed a disclosure measure. All 3 measure passed by at least 65%.

Republicans ISL theory could backfire

The author explains that Republicans have already exploited partisan gerrymandering to a greater extent than states with Democratic-dominated legislatures. California's commission could be thrown out,  yielding several new Democratic seats. Maryland's court decision could yield an even more Democratic-leaning map. His survey indicates a gain of up to 15 seats for Democrats.

The author thinks that Kavanaugh, Barrett, and Roberts are struggling to find a compromise path to rule in favor of a limited ISL Theory. Some 200 state commissions and high court rulings stand to  be overturned if a full-throated ISL is adopted.

Arizona election deniers demand a new 2022 election

Kari Lake who lost the race for Governor to Katie Hobbs and Abe Hamadeh who lost for Attorney General to Kris Mayes are suing to demand that their elections be declared invalid and that the elections be conducted anew. The AG race differential is only 510 votes, and an automatic recount will be conducted, but Hamadeh is not satisfied. [There were some problems in Maricopa County at polling places, but no evidence has yet been presented that it could have changed the outcome.]

Right-wing view of voter fraud and voter suppression

Heritage Society generally denies that race-, age-, or ethnicity-based voter suppression exists in Republican-dominated states and decries Democratic Party attempts to allow what he considers to be voter fraud. He says there have been 1,300 proven cases of voter fraud in the past 40 years. That's quite a low number given the scale of fraud alleged by election denialists.

Rural Nevada still obsessing about 2020 election lies

Rural Nevada accounts for less than 3% of the states' votes. Trump won by double digits in most places, with margins sometimes exceeding 50%. But rural Nevada election boards continue to obsess about purported voter fraud in and around Reno and Las Vegas. They want to eliminate all voting machines and use hand counting of ballots, and they somehow believe that if they switch to these methods, that the urban jurisdictions will be forced to follow suit.

Election administrators have been subjected to harassment and death threats and some have resigned, creating a prospect of chaos in administering the upcoming elections in these small counties.

The latest Data for Progress poll of the Georgia Senate race is tied between civil rights activist Raphael Warnock and Trump-endorsed extremist Hershel Walker. Fascist Republicans will control the Senate if they take even one seat, so this is an all-hands-on-deck moment.

Our organizing campaign in 2020 raised turnout in Georgia by 11% among our targeted voters and directly led to Senator Warnock's upset victory. Can we count on you to rush a donation now to help turn out enough voters to break this tie before our last end-of-quarter budget deadline before the election on Friday at midnight?

Despite echoing Trump's lies designed to destroy fair elections, calling for a deeply unpopular abortion ban with "no exceptions," and being unqualified in every way to serve in the Senate, Walker has used his access to unlimited billionaire support to buy enough attack ads to keep this race deadlocked.

That's why we're investing significant resources in Georgia to defeat Hershel Walker and stop a fascist takeover of the Senate:

Can we count on you to rush a donation before our last end-of-quarter deadline before Election Day to help us implement the same voter turnout program we ran in 2020 that raised turnout in Georgia by 11%? Your money will be put to work immediately, so any amount is a huge help in this tied race!

Crytpo regulation should not be left to rich crypto exploiters

Congress is considering regulating cryptocurrencies and committees are competing to hold jurisdiction so they can raise funds from billionaires and crypto companies.

"The rise of money in politics, in addition to the devastation it wreaks on our democratic system, creates incentives for certain elected officials to vie for certain committee seats, which they can then translate into campaign contributions from industry and corporate executives. In the fight over derivatives regulation [in 1999-2000], members who belonged to the House and Senate Agriculture committees discovered that they could raise millions of campaign dollars, not only from the stakeholders interested in traditional Ag committee work (like food and drug conglomerates and bioscience companies), but also from the businesses and billionaires with a vested interest in derivatives deregulation. As such, banks and other financial institutions were able to leverage and maintain murky regulatory authority to disseminate highly risky derivative products like credit default swaps–the same instruments that helped trigger the Great Recession."

Lawsuite re: Arizona's proof of citizenship requirement

.... This brings us to March 2022, when Arizona Republicans passed House Bill 2492, requiring all voters to submit documentary proof of citizenship to vote in all elections. H.B. 2492 now requires election officials to verify the citizenship of voters who, since the 2013 ruling, have registered using federal forms without needing to provide documentary proof of citizenship or registered before 2004. Up to 200,000 Arizonans could have their voting rights stripped away, especially since it can be quite difficult to prove citizenship and millions of Americans lack the kind of proof the law requires. Six lawsuits, including one by the U.S. Department of Justice, have been filed against the new law.
