As he was negotiating with Chuck Schumer for the energy permitting piece of the "Inflation Reduction Act" in the summer, Manchin created a new fundraising vehicle. Colorado Senator Hickenlooper supported the fossil-friendly part of the bill, and then contributions from Colorado energy companies flowed to Manchin. The fossil-friendly provision did not pass, but the two will keep trying.
